About Actionist:

Actionist is an AI-agent platform. Companies onboard, connect the apps they already use, and run agents that do real work through triggers, skills, memory and hosted runtimes. The product ships as a web app and a hosted runtime fleet.

Position Overview:

The tech lead is currently the single point of technical decision-making, code review and release management. We are hiring a hands-on Lead Engineer to take that on.

You will start as the tech lead's strong second: reviewing most of the code, making day-to-day technical calls, running releases and shipping hard things yourself, with the tech lead available for escalation. Over time you will take over ownership of engineering decisions so the tech lead can focus on new products and higher-level direction.

This is a technical leadership role, not a people-management role. You will guide, coach and unblock engineers. Your key stakeholders will be the CEO, Tech Lead, Head of Operations, Scrum Master and Product Owner.

Key Responsibilities:

The stack is TypeScript end to end

- Backend: Hono, Drizzle, PostgreSQL/AlloyDB, Clerk, Stripe, deployed on Google Cloud Run

- Client: pnpm monorepo with an Electron/React application, shared runtime packages, and a web app built with Vite

- LLM layer: managed prompt versions, evals and tracing with Langfuse

- Tooling: GitHub, GitLab CI, Terraform, Sentry, Cloud Logging

What you will do:

- Review pull requests across repositories and hold the bar on correctness, wiring, tests and documentation.

- Give the team technical direction every day: answer questions, unblock people, run design reviews before large changes, and write short design notes when a decision needs one.

- Own the release process: dev-to-prod branch flow, cherry-picks, hotfixes, database migrations, rollbacks and the CI gates around them.

- Ship the hardest work yourself: incidents, cross-repo features, performance, and the LLM and agent runtime.

- Lead AI-assisted development across the team: use Claude Code, Codex or similar as a primary way of building and reviewing, maintain the agent instruction files and review workflows, and raise everyone's throughput with them.

- Run lightweight engineering rituals with the tech lead: planning, standups and technical one-on-ones.

- Set and enforce the definition of done: a feature is finished when it is reachable end to end, tested, documented and released.

- Work with stakeholders to deliver the roadmap.

Qualifications:

- 7+ years building production software, with at least 3 years leading other engineers technically as a tech lead, staff engineer or lead engineer.

- Deep TypeScript and Node: strict TypeScript, ESM, pnpm workspaces, and monorepo build and test tooling such as vitest, jest, tsup and vite.

- Strong relational database skills: schema design, migrations under load, query performance and read replicas, with Drizzle or a comparable ORM.

- Expert git: rebases, cherry-picks across long-lived release branches, bisecting, worktrees, resolving difficult conflicts and keeping history readable. You have owned a release process before.

- Cloud operations on GCP or an equivalent: containers or Cloud Run, managed Postgres, infrastructure as code with Terraform, CI/CD, logging, alerting and on-call experience.

- LLM product engineering: multi-provider routing and fallback, structured outputs, tool calling, prompt versioning, evals, and cost and latency control.

- Daily user of agentic coding tools for real work, including review and verification, with a clear view of where they fail and how to check their claims.

- Fast and comfortable in large codebases you have not seen before.

- Clear written communication. You can explain a decision to a junior engineer and to a founder on the same day.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Electron, React, Vite, Zustand and React Query.

- Auth and billing integrations such as Clerk and Stripe.

- Multi-tenant runtime or fleet operations.

- Observability for LLM systems, for example Langfuse.

- Security review experience.

What success looks like:

- 30 days: reviewing most pull requests in both repositories, at least one non-trivial change shipped to production, and the release process written down as it actually works.

- 90 days: the tech lead's review load cut by more than half, a definition of done and release checklist the team follows, and no surprises from dev and prod branch divergence.

- 180 days: you own technical decisions for most of the roadmap, the team comes to you first, and cycle time from pull request to production is measurably shorter.
