About SquareFish

We are an entrepreneurial company based in Ireland. We partner with small- and medium-sized businesses to help them grow and become more profitable. Your role will play a big part in that. 

Usually, our partners look after the customers. It’s our job to build and maintain the websites which will attract those customers. We also build any tech systems the company might need while providing business support to make sure it is sustainably profitable. 


About the role

This is a full-time position. Working hours are flexible, but 60% of your working hours must overlap with Irish working time. 

Your main responsibility will be to maintain and improve the front end of multiple websites. These websites are hard-coded in html - we do not use a CMS. You will be responsible for website styles and user experience (i.e. you will not be creating content). 

Your job will be to manage the styling of all our websites in a way that maximises sales. Yes, we want all our websites to look visually impressive. But it is even more important that our websites easily convert visitors into buyers. So, when you are styling, you will be thinking a lot about our partners, their customers and their industries. 


The skills we are looking for

If these skills are a good match for your CV, we would love to hear from you. Some of them are essential, some are desirable. 

CSS / LESS / SASS / HTML coding skills (essential)

It will be your job to make our websites look visually impressive and easy to use. Sometimes this will involve a large-scale new build for a startup with no existing web presence. On other occasions, you will be improving specific aspects of our existing websites. In all cases, your code will be clean, efficient and reusable: everything you build will be coded as a module that can be reused for other websites in future. 

You will have a strong background in website styling and UI/UX design (as a hobby or a profession) and you will be able to show examples of your past work. 

Strong creative eye (essential)

We are not looking for an artist, but you will need to be naturally creative. You can look at a website and quickly notice things that don’t look right (e.g. whitespace, font pairings, color schemes, hard-to-understand interfaces etc.). In this job, you won’t often be asked to invent new styles from scratch. Instead, your job will be to find suitable, commonly-used styles which we can copy, and then to re-code them for our websites.

Good English language skills (essential)

You will be working in a team where English is the common language. You will need to be confident in presenting your ideas, taking instructions and improving written records in MS OneNote. Regular team meetings will be held in English via services such as Google Meet. Interviews will also be held in English.

Motivated to code efficiently (essential)

At SquareFish, we place a lot of emphasis on efficiency. That is true whatever we are working on, but it is especially important when it comes to coding. You will be a great fit in our team if you are uncomfortable with the idea of ‘taking shortcuts’ or ‘hacking’. In our team, we are always supported to take longer on a job today if that makes our code easier to maintain and reuse in future. 


Desirable skills, but not essential 


Basic knowledge of SEO (desirable)

You will be working alongside our in-house SEO team. You won’t be expected to do any SEO work in this role. But you will sometimes work with the SEO team to make sure that everything we code is SEO-friendly (e.g. page load speed). SEO knowledge is not essential and training will be available.

Basic knowledge of business, branding and marketing (desirable)

A handy extra skill is knowing which trends to follow, emulate and why. This requires an understanding of each business and what its customers are looking for. 

Basic knowledge of JS (desirable)

Working knowledge of other coding languages will be an advantage, but not essential. However, all team members at SquareFish must show a willingness to learn new skills.
