The Role

We’re looking for a highly collaborative and innovative data science leader who can guide the next stage of our product development. Working as part of a team alongside software and data engineers, you will develop the hypotheses, experiments and prototypes that will shape our next generation of reports and alerts. Personal contribution is key - we are looking for someone who enjoys working with complex data and bringing concepts to life through code. But you’ll also be helping the broader team to understand how data science techniques can be applied to help us deliver more value to our clients.

Whilst much of the work will be around how we rapidly derive value from data for our clients, our focus is to become ‘uncannily helpful’. Therefore we are interested in how we can apply data around user interactions with our service to deliver a more personalised and helpful experience. This will involve ensuring that we are collecting the right information and applying it appropriately.

You will have excellent collaboration skills and an ability to simplify complex concepts and models for audiences that have low data literacy. You won’t simply take direction and go through the motions. You’ll have a strong sense of ownership, a self-starting mindset and top problem-solving skills with a track record of commercially-meaningful innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Work with the Product team to prioritise specific focus areas for exploratory data science, in support of the overall Product Roadmap.
Develop and align the hypotheses to be tested then move on to modelling and evaluation
Lead the selection of appropriate statistical, ML or (occasionally) deep learning techniques to be applied to each exploration, drawing input from the broader team where the choice of technique will have an impact on production code
Collaborate with the data engineers to align the key data pipeline requirements to make the data science work possible. Perform your own data cleansing and transformations for early prototyping where appropriate.
Lead the thinking on outcomes that clients will experience (first), then the technical methodology that gets us there. This will involve spending some time on calls with clients and strong collaboration with the Product team.
Provide transparency on goals, action steps, progress and findings using the agreed suite of DevOps tools (JIRA, Confluence etc) and team stand-ups

Job Requirements

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to simplify concepts to bring others on board with your plans. Familiar with keeping diverse remote teams updated with progress.
Excellent English language skills
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving skills - the ability to break a complex problem down into smaller components; be aware of assumptions that are made; be resourceful in solving problems as they arise
Accountability and Ownership - we are a team that holds ourselves accountable for results as this makes us an exciting team to be part of
Business Sense - we can only create value for our clients if we are able to put ourselves in their shoes and understand the business and organisational problems to be solved. This enables us to deliver a product that has a real commercial impact on them.
Applied experience and education in AI and Machine Learning, especially with real-world production data (not just sample data). Aware of the practical advantages and limitations of different approaches as experienced beyond the classroom.
Experience in selecting the appropriate statistical methods for specific challenges and validating these selections
Experienced in working with a team of engineers in an agile setup
Experienced with commercially available self-service / no-code analytics platforms for the purposes of data exploration or visualisation
Accomplished in high-quality data preparation (Sourcing, arranging, processing and modelling data); comfortable with analysing large datasets at speed.
Cloud: Experienced in setting up an appropriate, secure cloud environment for data science (ideally in AWS) so that data remains cloud-based rather than residing on local machines
Visualisation: Understand how to present findings in a way that facilitates problem-solving and decision making
Coding proficiency: Expert in writing efficient, maintainable code and supporting this with appropriate documentation to enable collaboration across the team (Python is a must)
