Job Overview:
The Category Manager is responsible for managing a product category or group of categories to drive profitability, growth, and customer satisfaction. This role involves strategic planning, vendor management, pricing, marketing, and inventory control to ensure that the company’s product offering is competitive and aligned with market trends. The Category Manager works closely with internal stakeholders such as marketing, procurement, and sales teams to implement category strategies and achieve business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Category Strategy:
    • Develop and implement short-term and long-term strategies for assigned product categories.
    • Identify growth opportunities and market trends to enhance product offerings and maximize profitability.
    • Define pricing strategies, promotional plans, and product assortment based on data analysis and consumer behavior.
  2. Vendor Management:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers, negotiating contracts, pricing, and delivery terms.
    • Manage vendor performance to ensure high-quality products and timely deliveries.
    • Evaluate supplier capabilities and work on improving supplier relationships to secure the best value for the company.
  3. Inventory and Demand Planning:
    • Monitor inventory levels and sales performance to ensure optimal stock levels and minimize excess inventory.
    • Collaborate with supply chain and procurement teams to ensure timely replenishment and product availability.
    • Forecast product demand based on sales trends and market data, adjusting as needed.
  4. Pricing and Profitability:
    • Analyze market pricing, competitor pricing, and sales performance to set competitive pricing strategies.
    • Monitor category performance, focusing on margin improvements, sales growth, and cost reduction.
    • Implement effective pricing models and discount structures to drive category profitability.
  5. Market Analysis and Trends:
    • Conduct market research to stay updated on industry trends, customer preferences, and competitors' activities.
    • Use insights to identify product gaps, emerging categories, and opportunities to expand the category portfolio.
    • Present findings and category performance reports to senior management, proposing strategic adjustments.
  6. Cross-functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the marketing team to create category-specific campaigns and promotions.
    • Collaborate with sales and merchandising teams to ensure effective product placement and visual merchandising.
    • Partner with digital and e-commerce teams to enhance online product visibility and conversion rates.
  7. Performance Monitoring:
    • Track category performance using KPIs such as sales revenue, profitability, market share, and customer satisfaction.
    • Adjust category plans and strategies based on performance analysis to meet targets.
    • Ensure regular reporting of category metrics to management.
Key Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, supply chain management, or a related field. An MBA is a plus.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in category management, product management, or a related field, preferably in retail, FMCG, or e-commerce.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong data analysis skills, with the ability to interpret market data, sales performance, and financial metrics.
  • Negotiation Skills: Proven experience in negotiating contracts and managing vendor relationships.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present insights and strategies to stakeholders.
  • Tech-savvy: Proficient in using category management software, ERP systems, and MS Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and project management skills to drive cross-functional collaboration and manage category initiatives.
