About the role

Map’s Data Scientist is a person who enables the team to empower their products with the tremendous power of data. You will struggle with lots of open source projects and contribute back when you can. In addition, you work closely with our engineers to ensure system consistency and improve the user experience.
In a nutshell, You'll extract, analyze and interpret large amounts of data from a range of sources, using algorithmic, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistical tools, in order to make it accessible to the team. We are looking for the type of person who feels uncomfortable when a day goes by without achieving something impactful. Someone who is driven to get things done and views obstacles as an exciting challenge that demands a creative solution.


Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the team to identify issues and use data to propose solutions for effective decision making
  • Build algorithms and design experiments to merge, manage, interrogate and extract data to supply tailored reports to colleagues, customers or the wider organization
  • Use machine learning tools and statistical techniques to produce solutions to problems
  • Assess the effectiveness of data sources and data-gathering techniques and improve data collection methods
  • Look for opportunities to use insights/datasets/code/models across other functions in the team
  • Establish new systems and processes and look for opportunities to improve the flow of data
  • Share your knowledge by giving brown bags, tech talks, and evangelizing appropriate tech and engineering best practices
  • Can help lead large projects from idea to positive execution

Requirements

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science/Data Science or relevant field
  • Must have 2+ years of data science industry experience
  • Teamwork skills with a problem-solving attitude
  • Effective communication skill with a positive attitude
  • Strong understanding of data mining concepts
  • Experience in some of the programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala or R
  • Experience using data frameworks (e.g. Hadoop)
  • Understand the model build life-cycle, including feature selection and optimization, model selection and validation, and ongoing model maintenance
  • Strong math skills (e.g. statistics)
  • Proficiency in Linux and bash scripting
  • Ability to work as a team player
Preferred Qualifications (optional)

  • Proficiency in software engineering topics
  • Exposure to some or all of these technologies: ELK Stack, Docker, and Openshift
  • Familiarity with map, location and navigation concepts
  • Familiarity with OpenStreetMap
  • Familiarity with routing engines
  • Proficiency in algorithms
