Senior Backend Developer (Node.js / NestJS) — Airline Booking Platform
About the Role
We are building a next-generation airline digital platform from the ground up — a full-scale booking and customer engagement ecosystem covering everything from ticket search and purchase to loyalty programs and B2B agency operations. This is a high-ownership role: you'll have real influence over how the backend is architected and built, working on a complex, multi-module platform designed to serve high transaction volumes and multiple user types, including passengers, travel agency partners, and internal teams.
We're looking for a Senior Backend Developer who is comfortable taking full ownership of core services, making sound architectural decisions independently, and building a system designed to scale from day one — without needing heavy oversight to move forward.
What You'll Be Building
You'll work on the backend powering our airline's online booking platform: the passenger-facing ticket purchase and self-service experience, add-on and loyalty services, a B2B portal for travel agency partners, and an internal admin system with role-based access for different business functions. The work spans real-time pricing and inventory logic, secure payment processing, and building services that stay reliable and performant as usage grows.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and well-tested backend services using NestJS.
Architect modular systems (following domain-driven / modular monolith or microservices principles) that support independent development and future extensibility.
Design and optimize relational/NoSQL database schemas for high-throughput transactional workloads.
Build and integrate with third-party systems: payment gateways, GDS/airline inventory systems, SMS/email providers, and lending/BNPL platforms.
Implement robust authentication, authorization, and role-based access control across multiple user types (passengers, agencies, internal staff).
Ensure system performance, reliability, and security under real-world production load.
Collaborate closely with the rest of the team to deliver end-to-end features.
Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code and participate in code reviews.
Contribute to technical decision-making regarding architecture, tooling, and best practices.
Requirements
4+ years of professional experience as a Backend Developer.
Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and NestJS (or strong TypeScript backend framework experience with fast ramp-up on NestJS).
Solid understanding of TypeScript and modern JavaScript ecosystem practices.
Experience designing and building RESTful APIs.
Strong database skills (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar) — schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
Practical experience with scalable, high-traffic systems — you understand caching, queuing, load handling, and performance tuning under real production pressure.
Experience with microservices or modular architecture patterns.
Familiarity with authentication/authorization patterns (JWT, OAuth2, RBAC).
Experience with message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis Pub/Sub, or similar).
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and version control (Git).
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving product environment.
Nice to Have
Prior experience in the airline, travel, or OTA industry (booking engines, GDS integration, fare/inventory systems) is a plus.
Experience with real-time systems (WebSockets) and event-driven architecture.
Exposure to AI/ML-driven features such as dynamic pricing or recommendation engines.
